Silicon nitride-based ceramics are particularly useful in engineering applications due to their excellent combination of properties. The high hardness and abrasion resistance make it particularly suitable for tribological applications.
Usually used as a passivation layer for integrated circuits or micromechanical structures.
Compared with silicon dioxide, silicon nitride has significantly better resistance to water and sodium diffusion. Silicon nitride is also used as a dielectric material for microelectronic or photonic applications.
